Who Are We?
In 1999, three friends decided to get together and take over the
management of a small hotel in the heart of Sultanahmet, the historical
area of Turkey’s most famous city of Istanbul. The hotel that we chose was
the Tashkonak, an old 19th century Ottoman mansion that had been converted
from two old stone (Taş) houses. We wanted to offer visitors to Istanbul
somewhere to stay that was different from the other hotels and hostels in
the area. At Tashkonak, our guests experience a real family atmosphere,
together with genuine Turkish hospitality. All our guests are very
important to us. In fact, they are more than just hotel guests. They
become our friends and are part of an extended family, the Tashkonak
family.
Our Hotels
We have come a long way since we started, going from strength to strength,
building a reputation that makes Tashkonak one of the most popular
boutique hotels in Istanbul and Sultanahmet. What makes Tashkonak
different from the other hotels and apartment? Staying at Tashkonak
Hotel, where the original rooms, together with traditional decoration and
furnishings, is like stepping back in time to the Ottoman period, but with
all the conveniences of modern times. Tashkonak (www.hoteltashkonak.com)
also has something which is a rarity among the other hotels in the
Sultanahmet area, a beautiful secluded terraced garden. Our roof-top
terraces, where you can enjoy a traditional Turkish buffet breakfast, have
a magnificent view of the Marmara Sea and the coast of the Asian side of
Istanbul.
In addition to our main hotel, we have opened a small suites on a
nearby site, offering a different type of accommodation to that of other

is a beautifully restored 19th century Ottoman house, recently converted
into 6 studio with kitchenette. Each of the studio apartments
has been tastefully furnished in the traditional style and colours of the
Ottoman period. The handmade furniture and fabrics help create the
atmosphere of an Ottoman house. The kitchenette and bathroom have all the
modern facilities to make your stay at the Tashkonak Istabul suite
comfortable and care-free.

Istanbul And Sultanahmet
Turkey lies in two continents, with Istanbul sitting both in Europe and
Asia. Sultanahmet is located in the heart of the European side of Istanbul.
The narrow, cobbled streets of this old part of Istanbul are full of
hotels, apartment/apart hotels, boutique hotels, hostels and suite hotels.
However, many of these hotels advertise that they are small, boutique,
family-run or traditional, but these descriptions are not always accurate,
so before you book, please check them out on www.tripadvisor.com. In
between the hotels, there are beautiful, small old stone and wooden houses.
Some of the streets still retain the old village atmosphere of the
Sultanahmet of days gone by. The Tashkonak hotels are ideally situated
within walking distance of the most famous historical places like the Blue
Mosque, Topkapı Palace, the Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern and the
Grand Bazaar. You can even walk to the Egyptian Spice Market and the
famous Sirkecı railway station. A short tram journey will take you into
the heart of the modern part of European Istanbul, where ancient and
modern lie side by side. The two most famous areas are Taksim and Beyoğlu.
Around Taksim you will find the larger hotels like the Hilton and the
Marmara. Istiklal Street is where you will find many designer shops,
restaurants and cafes. In neighbouring Beyoğlu, there are numerous bars
and nightclubs for an exciting nightlife.
How To Get Here
Istanbul is known as the gateway to Asia and is the first place that
visitors arrive at before they continue their journey into Turkey.
Istanbul is served by two main international airports, Ataturk Airport,
just 20 minutes by road from the Tashkonak hotels and Sabiah Gokcen
Airport on the Asian side, just 60 minutes from Sultanahmet. For those
travelling to Istanbul by bus from Europe, there is an international bus
terminal at Esenler, 25 minutes from Sultanahmet. The bus terminal at
Haydapaşa on the Asian side, serves those travelling into the heart of
Turkey and beyond. Trains from Europe to Turkey arrive at the famous
Sirkeci Railway Station, just a 20 minute walk away. There are also many
ports around Istanbul where the large cruise ships dock while their
passengers marvel at the delights of the old city.
When To Visit
Istanbul’s weather is very similar to that of Europe, but with longer and
hotter summers. However, anytime of the year, you will find Istanbul an
ideal city to visit. It is perfect for that weekend city break, a shopping
trip or a longer break. There is always a lot to see and do. During a
Spring break, you will see the city full of multi-coloured tulips and you
can enjoy the many tulip festivals. Although Christmas is not celebrated
here, New Year is our time for celebration, December sees the shops full
of gifts, the streets and hotels decorated with Christmas trees, even
Father Christmases walking around. As an alternative to visiting the
Christmas markets, come to Istanbul for your Christmas shopping. The city
also hosts many exhibitions, conferences and festivals, including a Jazz
Festival and a Blues Festival as well as the more traditional types of
entertainment. During the summer, you can relax at one of the many tea
gardens or take a cruise along the Bosphorous.
